Comic Co-Creation Workflow

May 12, 2026 – May 12, 2026 | Note

Core Goal

We are not trying to generate isolated “good images.”

We are trying to create:

  • an emotionally coherent comic
  • grounded in oral history and memory
  • with strong pacing, atmosphere, and thematic continuity

The project should feel:

  • human
  • intimate
  • historically textured
  • reflective rather than sensationalized

Guiding Principles

1. Story First, Images Second

The narrative spine matters more than visual polish.

Before refining art, we should understand:

  • pacing
  • emotional escalation
  • transitions
  • recurring motifs
  • thematic coherence

A rough but emotionally effective comic is more valuable than a polished but emotionally flat one.

2. Build the Whole Thing Early

We should avoid polishing individual pages too early.

Instead:

  1. create rough versions of the entire comic
  2. read the comic end-to-end
  3. identify structural issues
  4. revise
  5. only then polish visuals

This functions like an animatic or rough cut in filmmaking.

3. Work at the Page Level

The unit of iteration is:

  • a page
  • not a single image

Each page should contain:

  • panel descriptions
  • narration/dialogue
  • emotional intent
  • visual composition goals

We optimize for readability and flow first.

4. Embrace Memory-Like Imperfection

Current image models struggle with:

  • exact face consistency
  • recurring architecture
  • strict continuity

This project can use that creatively.

The comic is fundamentally about:

  • memory
  • oral history
  • reconstruction
  • inherited experience

Slight visual drift may actually strengthen the feeling of remembered history.

We should prioritize:

  • emotional consistency over
  • photographic consistency

Phase 1 — Storyboarding

Create:

  • act structure
  • page-by-page outline
  • rough panel layouts
  • narration/dialogue
  • recurring imagery/themes

Focus on:

  • emotional clarity
  • pacing
  • narrative momentum

Phase 2 — Rough Comic Draft

Generate rough versions of all pages.

Goals:

  • readable
  • emotionally coherent
  • visually consistent enough
  • fast iteration

Avoid:

  • perfectionism
  • excessive detail
  • over-rendering

This draft exists so we can react to the comic as a whole.

Phase 3 — Structural Revision

After reading the rough draft:

  • tighten pacing
  • cut redundant scenes
  • strengthen transitions
  • elevate symbolic moments
  • improve emotional rhythm

Potential recurring motifs:

  • rain
  • walls/gates
  • roofs
  • rail lines
  • ponds/water
  • thresholds/borders
  • games/childhood
  • crowds vs domestic interiors

Phase 4 — Visual Refinement

Only after structure stabilizes:

  • improve character consistency
  • refine environments
  • unify palette/style
  • enhance cinematic framing
  • improve facial expressions and silence

At this point we can selectively regenerate stronger versions of key pages.

Historical vs Cinematic Truth

The goal is not literal documentary reconstruction.

The goal is:

  • emotional truth
  • historical atmosphere
  • coherent lived experience

Events may be:

  • compressed
  • merged
  • rearranged
  • symbolically emphasized

Some moments should function as emotional anchors even if they were one event among many.

Tone Targets

The comic should feel:

  • reflective rather than melodramatic
  • intimate rather than epic
  • grounded rather than mythologized
  • humane across communities
  • visually warm even amid violence

Important: ordinary life should remain visible throughout the story.

Games, food, rain, school, family routines, and humor are essential counterweights to the Partition material.

Practical AI Constraints

Current strengths:

  • mood
  • composition
  • painterly atmosphere
  • cinematic framing
  • rapid iteration

Current weaknesses:

  • exact continuity
  • precise layout control
  • long-range consistency

So:

  • iterate quickly
  • keep drafts disposable
  • preserve flexibility
  • avoid overcommitting early

The comic should evolve through repeated passes rather than attempting perfection immediately.
